Fair warning, this is not my “regularly scheduled” Movember 6th theme. Well, not exactly. I mean, I am not sporting a mou’ that is a “little Sax” and a bit of Sousa. Nor am I slipping in history and statistics about Movember and men’s health. However, there is some focus on the heart and on mental health. There is also a playlist inspired by Adolphe Sax and John Philip Sousa — and there is a bit of information about them below.
Born today in 1814 (in present-day Belgium), Adolphe Sax was a musician who was particularly accident prone when he was a child. His many accidents included falling three stories and hitting his head on the stone below; drinking a bowl full of acidic water (that he thought was milk); swallowing a pin; and being burnt by a gunpowder explosion and after falling against a cast-iron frying pan. He also had several incidents when he was almost poisoned and suffocated from sleeping in a room with furniture that still had wet varnish. His neighbors called him “little Sax, the ghost” and no one expected him to live very long. Yet, he lived to the age of 79.
Adolphe Sax’s parents were instrument designers and he followed in their footsteps. First, he redesigned the bass clarinet when he was in his 20s. He went on to invent the saxophone (which he patented in 1846) — with designs ranging from sopranino to subcontrabass. He also invented the saxotromba, saxhorn, and saxtuba. Not all his designs were built and even some of the ones that were built were not successful (e.g., the clarinette-bourdon, an early version of the contrabass clarinet). His work paved the way for the creation of the flugelhorn and the modern euphonium (similar to a baritone horn). More importantly, his instruments became very popular with people composing music for concert bands, (military) marching bands, and orchestras.
One of those composers was John Philip Sousa, who was born today in 1854, in Washington, D. C. Known as the “March King” or the “American March King” (so he wouldn’t be confused with the British composer Kenneth J. Alford), John Philip Sousa was the composer of “The Stars and Stripes Forever” (the National March of the United States of America), “Semper Fidelis” (the official march of the United States Marine Corps), “The Liberty Bell”, “The Volunteers”, and “Daughters of Texas.” He also composed “The Beau Ideal” and “The Diplomat” — both which I am definitely channeling today.

The perfect example of something is the beau ideal. According to Paul E. Bierley, in The Works of John Philip Sousa, “The expression ‘beau ideal’ was used in the early 1890’s to describe anything that had caught the public fancy.” Nowadays, when I see the title, I think of Rule 303, which was introduced to me by a guy called “Beau” and which I think is an ideal way to get things done — especially during challenging times.
While “The Diplomat” was officially dedicated to the diplomatic skills and bearing of Secretary of State John Milton Hay, it was (unofficially) dedicated to “the unseen cook who prepared that tenderloin [in Mitchell, South Dakota].” So, I aim to be diplomatic and to provide a little food for thought.
To that end, let me first address the elephant in the room. I recognize that there are people who don’t really care about the U. S. election; people who believe their life will stay the same; and people who are…[relieved, excited, grateful?] — feeling some kind of positive way about the election results. To those people, I say (a) I am holding space for you in this practice and (b) I wish you the best and hope that the best comes with very little detriment to others.
To people who are not feeling so positive, I want to tell you about three “older” women.

The first woman was my neighbor Evelyn. Before she passed last year, she always took the opportunity to speak. Sometimes it was a wave across our lawns. Other times it was a startling knock on her window when she saw me practicing yoga in my driveway. If we were in a position to talk, she would ask how I was doing; ask after my family; and then — every single time — she would say, “We have to look out for each other.”
There are a lot of times when I think of Evelyn, when I think about our random conversations, and when I think about those final words. They are words to live by. They are the epitome of what (I think) it means to be a good neighbor. To be clear, I am using the word “good” as it is used in the Hebrew Bible / Christian Old Testament and the word “neighbor” in the way it is used throughout the (written) Torah and the Christian New Testament. To paraphrase the meaning of the latter, a neighbor can be:

Someone similar to you;
-
Someone perceived as different from you who lives in close proximity; and/or
-
Someone with whom you cross paths when one or both of you are in need.
In Shemot / Exodus and, also, in The Gospel According to Luke (10:29 – 37), a good neighbor is not defined by their ethnicity, nationality, religion, and/or socioeconomic background. A good neighbor is defined by their actions. A good neighbor comes through in times of need and trauma, perhaps providing you with what you need to survive a long journey and what you need to make it to better days. (S/E 3:22)
This is how we look out for each other. This is just another version of Rule 303.
Some may feel like their neighbors are not (and have not been) looking out for them. I can’t blame you if you feel that way. But, if you do, please remember, that the world is more connected than it has ever been and that there are “good neighbors” all around you. Connect and stay connected. You may have resources and knowledge that someone else needs just as they may have resources and knowledge that you need.

If you feel like we have entered the Twilight Zone, you are not alone — which brings me to the second woman inspiring my practice today: the woman in “Episode 81 (3.16) — ‘Nothing in the Dark’” of The Twilight Zone. We have all been that woman, frightened by a shadow or a sound or a feeling in the dark. Metaphorically speaking, many of us are currently that women. But, we must remember, that anyone who wishes us harm today, wished it yesterday; that hasn’t changed. Anyone who had our back yesterday, has it today. More importantly, the things that we wanted or needed fixed yesterday, still need to be fixed today. The work that needs to be done in the world was never going to be finished at the ballot box.
Sure, it might be harder to get certain things done. It might even [now] seem impossible. It may also seem like there are more obstacles in the way — although, it is possible that those obstacles were already there… in the dark. However, do not lose faith in yourself.
Remember, as we have been saying during the Saturday practices: You are prepared, and have what you need to succeed. The key, as always, is to focus your energy on what you can do and what you are doing. Then, let go of the rest.
Do whatever your heart and mind-body-spirit need to move forward. Take a moment to rest, grieve, howl at the moon, and/or sing. Dance. Eat well and stay hydrated. Send (or give) someone a hug and some love in the way they will appreciate it. Rest some more. And then, be like a bee or a donkey and get busy.
Finally, if you believe in God — whatever that mean to you at this moment — do not lose faith in that Higher Power. In the wee hours of the morning, I found myself listening to the words of Saint Teresa of Ávila (my final woman of the day). She was writing about the prayer of quiet, which is one of the nine grades of prayer described in her works. She was writing from a contemplative Christian mystic perspective and, yet, her words mirror those found in the Bhagavad Gita. Similar words and intention are also found in the Yoga Sūtras. I could go on; but, my point is this: Even though some of these texts come from vastly different traditions, the instructions are ultimately the same.

You may or may not have noticed, but there is something… different about the post titles for yesterday and today. They don’t seem to make sense. If you have a passing knowledge (or are fluent) in a language other than English, you might recognize a word or two and guess that the others are words you didn’t learn or don’t remember. However, the truth is that the titles are in more than one language. Each language is a nod to an observation or celebration that occurred today. While the rituals and traditions can seem very different, they all come back to the same things: They all shine a “Light on Life, Death, & [All] Souls”.
Today, November 2nd, is All Souls’ Day, also known as the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed — the last day of Allhallowtide in the Western Christian tradition and the final Día de (los) Muertos in Mexico and the Mexican diaspora. This year, these observations and celebrations coincide with the fifth and final day of Diwali.
“‘The knowing Self is not born; It does not die. It has not sprung from anything; nothing has sprung from It. Birthless, eternal, everlasting and ancient, It is not killed when the body is killed.’
‘Atman, smaller than the small, greater than the great, is hidden in the hearts of all living creatures. A man who is free from desires beholds the majesty of the Self through tranquility of the senses and the mind and becomes free from grief.’”

There is an obvious tie-in between the celebrations and observations referenced today, because one of the siblings in today’s Diwali story is, quite literally, “Death.” However, as I mentioned during the practice, I got a little stuck, because this fifth day of Diwali is a day when I usually reference my relationship with my (thankfully, very much alive) brothers.

“The final day of Diwali, the 5-day festival of light celebrated throughout India, Southeast Asia, and the diaspora, is a day devoted to siblings — specifically the bond between sisters and brothers. Sisters, who celebrate today in this way, may give a puja (“offering” and prayers) on behalf of their brothers — that their brothers may enjoy a long, healthy, and happy life — and then will host a dinner in honor of their brothers. But, it’s not just a matter of creating a feast with their brothers’ favorite food. No, in some traditions, a sister will hand feed their brothers.”

During the darkest times of the year, as people all over the world celebrate light overcoming darkness, I often talk about how different cultures and different faith-based traditions include stories in their celebrations where light overcoming darkness can symbolize all kinds of things: good overcoming evil; life overcoming death, wisdom overcoming fear; love overcoming hate; hope overcoming despair, and knowledge overcoming ignorance. During Diwali, the five-day Indian festival of light that started on Tuesday, I often tell a story that highlights all of those metaphors — a story in which Death is vanquished and life prevails. It is a story I often tell on this fourth day of Diwali, which some people dedicate to husbands and wives.

In India and Southeast Asia, Diwali (the 5-day festival of lights) is celebrated by a very diverse group of people. The diversity is not only religious and spiritual — as it is a tradition for Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, and Newar Buddhists. There are many other sociocultural differences. So, as you can imagine, there are lots of different ways that people tell the story of light overcoming darkness, good overcoming evil; life overcoming death, wisdom overcoming fear; love overcoming hate; hope overcoming despair, and knowledge overcoming ignorance.
For instance, in some rural parts of north, west, and central India, the fourth day of Diwali is a day when people observe Govardhan puja, an offering to honor the legend of Krishna saving the cowherds and farmers from the rain and floods by lifting Mount Govardhan. People build miniature-sized mountains out of cow dung and also “build” mountains of food and mountains of sweets. There is also thanksgiving, especially around the purchase of staples, like salt, which are considered essentials to life.

The main day of Diwali, yesterday, is often associated with the part of the epic poem the Rāmāyaņa when Rāma, his bride Sītā, and his brother Lakshmana returned home after 14 years in exile. According to the legend, their homecoming was met with brightly lit candles, lamps, and fireworks. The homecoming and the light festivities marked the end of the darkness that represented the jealousy which led to the trio’s exile and Sītā’s kidnapping during the exile, as well as the doubt and fear felt by some of the characters that appear throughout the poem. The lights symbolize the couples love, devotion, and faith in each other; Lakshmana and Hanuman’s devotion to Rāma; and their victory over those who tried to defeat them.
Ergo, for a good majority, this fourth day shines a light on love, relationships, and devotion — especially between husbands and wives. In some areas, husbands give their wives gifts and other areas parents treat their newlywed children to a feast (which also involves gifts).
In addition to telling those aforementioned parts of the Rāmāyaņa, people will also celebrate the story of the defeat of the evil King Bali. Sometimes the story is related to a husband and wife (Shiva and Pārvatī) playing a game of dice on a board with twelve squares and thirty pieces. Every element of the story is symbolic — including the fact that it is a “strip” version of the game, during which the husband ceremoniously looses all his clothes.
One of my favorite husband-wife Diwali stories is actually associated with the first day; but I also tell it on this day. It is the story of a clever wife who used light (and all the properties of light) to “defeat” Death (Yama, in the form of a snake) when he arrived on the fourth night of her marriage in order to take away her new husband, the prince. The legend always reminds me of Scheherazade, in that the wife in the Diwali story also spends the night telling stories and singing songs in order to extend life.

This year, the fourth day of Diwali falls on November 1st, which is the end of Samhain and the second day of Allhallowtide. It is known as All Hallows Day, meaning it is holy, or All Saints Day in Western Christianity and it is the beginning of Día de (los) Muertos for Mexicans and the Mexican diaspora. Similar rituals, like Hanal Pixan in Yucatán, can be found in Central and South America.
Traditionally today is a memorial day for saints and innocents, i.e. young children, and is a national holiday in some Christian countries. In the Methodist tradition, it is a solemn occasion of remembrance and thanksgiving observed by Christians who have a “fundamental belief that there is a prayerful spiritual bond between those in heaven (Christian triumphant) and the living (the Christian militant).” People will pray for blessings and protection; tend graves; leave flowers — like chrysanthemums in Belgium and France — and; in some country there is an exchange of traditional (and symbolic) treats. In Mexico and for the Mexican diaspora, however, Día de (los) Muertos is traditionally all of the above and a giant celebration full of brightly colored parades, music and dancing, candy skulls, marigolds, and ofrendas (“offerings”) or home or graveside alters curated around the life of a loved one.

In all of the aforementioned traditions, we are taught that everyone has light inside of them — which means that remembering someone’s light keeps it shining bright. During this First Friday Night Special, we “remember the light & illumination.”

Prop wise, this is a kitchen sink practice and there are times when I suggest using a wall, chair, sofa, or coffee table. You may want extra layers (as your body may cool down during this practice). Having a wall, chair, sofa, or coffee table will be handy for this practice. Example of “Studio” props: 1 – 2 blankets, 2 – 3 blocks, a bolster, a strap, and an eye pillow. Examples of “householder” props: 1 – 2 blankets or bath towels, 2 – 3 books (similar in size), 2 standard pillows (or 1 body pillow), a belt/tie/sash, and a face towel.

During the darkest times of the year, people all over the world celebrate light. In each culture’s stories and traditions, light overcoming darkness is a metaphor for good overcoming evil; life overcoming death, wisdom overcoming fear; love overcoming hate; hope overcoming despair, and knowledge overcoming ignorance. Once again, the celebrations kick off with Diwali, the Indian festival of lights.
This year (2024), Diwali overlaps Halloween, Allhallowtide, and Samhain.

Diwali is a five-day celebration which takes its name from Deepavali, which are rows and rows of lamps. It is a lunar calendar based holiday observed throughout India, parts of Southeast Asia, and the diaspora by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and Newar Buddhists. Each day has different rituals and customs, which may vary between religious, cultural, and regional traditions. But, the common threads are the (clay) lamps and other great displays of light; pujas (“offerings”); feasts and sweets; epic tales of heroes and heroines prevailing; and a focus on relationships and also on wealth.
While some communities start earlier, most people’s Diwali celebrations begin with Dhanteras (October 29, 2024), a day that the Indian ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy designated as “National Ayurveda Day” (in 2016). Many pujans (“offering ceremonies”) are dedicated to Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, fertility and abundant crops, and overall good fortunate. People also create decorations, including rangolas, which are associated with Lakshmi; clean their homes; and buy something new — usually gold, silver, clothes, and gadgets.
The second day of Diwali (which was Wednesday in 2024) is known as Choti (“little”) Diwali and, also, as Naraka Chaturdasi. Naraka is a Sanskrit word for “hell” and the day is associated with the story of Krishna defeating the asura (“demon”) Narakasura. Again, the elements of the story — as well as the rituals and traditions of the day — have symbolic significance related to the ways people live their lives and the ways their souls can be liberated from suffering (i.e., hell). Some people spend the day praying to the souls of their ancestors, sending light for their afterlife journey. In some regions (e.g., Tamil Nadu, Goa, and Karnataka), Choti Diwali is the main Diwali day. People get oil massages and take ritual baths. Some people also spend part of the day visiting their temple. For people celebrating the “little” Diwali, the second day is a day to visit friends and family and share sweets and gifts.

The legends that surround them are told over and over again and soon the children know them by heart. For them, as it is for me, these beautiful lotus-eyed goddesses are not just religious icons but part of one’s family. They laugh and cry, quarrel with each other over petty things, they have fragile natures despite their powerful forms. They are often jealous, angry, greedy and plot deviously against their enemies but still they need to be loved by their devotees, Then they appear, splendid, glorious and benevolent, to dazzle us with their all-pervading light.”

The third day (today, October 31st) is the biggest day for most: Diwali! It coincides with the darkest night of the festival and is normally marked by people getting together, feasting and celebrating. In fact, this is a time when the youngest members of the family visit their elders; businesses owners give gifts to their employees; and, instead of the fasts that are commonly associated with some Indian religious rituals, there are great feasts. Pujas are again made to Lakshmi. For some people, however, pujans are dedicated to Kali, the goddess of time and change, creation, power, war, destruction, and death. In many ways, making an offering to Kali highlights the fact that Diwali is a day of renewal, new beginnings, and starting over.
The stories in the Rāmāyaņa highlight all of the themes associated with Diwali — and the end is particularly pertinent to the third day. In the epic poem (which is part of the Mahābhārata), Rāma, his wife Sītā, and his brother Lakshmana are exiled by the brothers’ father. Their great adventure includes Sītā being kidnapped by the demon king Ravana (and rescued with help from Hanuman, the monkey king); a great battle where an entire army gets sick (and ultimately healed, thanks to Hanuman); the defeat of Ravana; and the revelation that Hanuman overcame his doubts, insecurities, and fears by focusing on the love and devotion for Lord Rama that shined (like a bright light) in his heart. Finally, after 14 years of exile, Rāma, Sītā, and Lakshmana returned home to Ayodhya — on the day that is now celebrated as Diwali. According to the legends, people lit up the city in order to guide the travelers home and also to celebrate their return. So, every year, people from all of the different religions light up their homes, businesses, and temples to commemorate this auspicious homecoming.
SIDE NOTE: As they travelled home, Sītā requested a pit stop in Kishkindha, because she wanted to enter Ayodhya with a company of women as her escorts. The request and fulfillment are conveyed in just a few lines, making up a minuscule portion of the epic poem. Normally, I would not mention this tiny passage — even though, if you think about it, it is a powerful moment when a woman who has suffered trauma and drama asks for (and receives) what she needs before facing what could be more trauma, drama, and judgement.
It also highlights the power of a group of women standing up for each other — which I highlighted in 2023, because Diwali fell on the anniversary of the birth of the birth of Elizabeth Cady Stanton (the social activist, abolitionist, and suffragist who was born on November 12, 1815, in Johnstown, New York). I’m mentioning here it again, in 2024, just in case someone needs the subliminal message.

Two questions have come up again and again over the last two weeks: “How could I spend my time?” and “What does happiness mean to you?” Both questions and this whole week of Sukkot — especially with yesterday’s focus on people who experienced major setbacks and “failures” — made me think of the phrase above that my grandmother often said. It also made me think about our overall perspectives, which is typically the underlying focus during my classes on October 23rd.*

(*NOTE: The Hebrew word “hevel” (variations of which occur in K-E 1.2, 3 times in the singular and twice in the plural, for a total of 7 times) is often translated into English as “vanity,” “futility” or “meaningless,” but is literally translated as “breath.)
Once again, we are faced with that time-honored — and time-honoring — question: “How could I spend my time?”
Since last Wednesday at sunset marked the beginning of Sukkot, some people have spent time in a a sukkah, a temporary shelter consisting of three walls of any material and a roof made of natural fiber. (Natural being something grown from the earth.) As I have mentioned before (see link above), people within the Jewish community and people who observe holidays commanded in Devarim / Deuteronomy, celebrate the “Festival (or Feast) of the Tabernacles (or Booths)” for seven days, 8 in the diaspora.
People will eat, sleep, socialize, and sometimes work in their temporary shelter — but, not necessarily every day. The first two days of Sukkot are both yom tov (“good day”), meaning they are the commanded days with obligations and restrictions similar to those observed on Shabbat (the Sabbath). For some, this means that normal every day work is forbidden. Depending on ethnicity and tradition, certain prayers, rituals, and traditions are only observed on the first two days, on the first and last two days, or throughout the week. For example, in some traditions, the time in the sukkah is the time to read Kohelet / Ecclesiastes.

While many people — even non-religious people in various religious traditions — are familiar with the third chapter of Kohelet / Ecclesiastes, they may not realize that what comes before could be translated in a less than hopeful way. For example, if “hevel” is translated as “vanity,” “futility” or “meaningless,” the beginning not only reinforces the temporal nature of life, it makes it seem as if there is no point in doing anything. When everything we do — all the work we do — is seen as pointless, then our earlier question becomes, “Why bother doing anything?” or “What’s the point of doing anything?”
Of course, the point that the Teacher (King Solomon) reaches is the same point that Krishna explains to Arjuna in the Bhagavad Gita: there is good, there is evil, there is wisdom, there is ignorance/foolishness and — perhaps most importantly — that we are “supposed to live a truth-based life, a life of dharma [duty].” (BG 2.2)
Oh, and also, “Be happy. This is your opportune moment!” (BG 2.32)
“‘The ideal, Arjuna, is to be intensely active and at the same time have no selfish motives, no thoughts of personal gain or loss. duty uncontaminated by desire leads to inner peacefulness and increased effectiveness. This is the secret art of living a life of real achievement!’” (2.47 excerpt)
“‘To work without desire may seem impossible, but the way to do it is to substitute thoughts of Divinity for thoughts of desire. Do your work in this world with your heart fixed on the Divine instead of on outcomes. Do not worry about results. Be even tempered in success or failure. This mental evenness is what is mean by yoga…. Indeed, equanimity is yoga!’” (2.48)

Being “even tempered in success or failure” is easier said than done. While there are some people who seem to be born with an even-tempered disposition, many (maybe most) others have to work at it; practice, in order to cultivate the habit. We can learn a lot from either personality type, especially if we do a little svādhyāya (“self-study”) and put ourselves in their shoes.
For instance, how would you react if, like Alfred Nobel (born October 21, 1833), you spent much of your adult life working to make the world a better place — only to find out in a moment of grief that the world hated you (and your life’s work)?
Or, how would you spend your time if, after several months of working long hours (and after what others considered failures), you finally successfully tested the first (commercially viable) electric light bulb — as 32-year old Thomas Edison did in the late on the evening of October 21st, or sometime in the wee early morning hours of October 22nd, 1879?
Finally, how would you react if, after 35 years of success, all your hard work went up in smoke? Would you spend your time the way Thomas Edison and his team did in 1914? Would you give up or would you be gleeful, joyful, and grateful for what was to come?

“Some would say that the ‘ah-ha’ moment came to Thomas Edison one night when he was ‘absent mindedly’ rolling a piece of lampblack (or black carbon) between his fingers. But such a depiction ignores all the previous experiments, his scientific knowledge, and the fact he had used lampblack in his telephone transmitter. Such a premise also discounts the additional changes that would be made before the bulb was commercially viable.”

Franz Liszt is on the 2024 remixed playlist (and the earlier playlists for this date), because he was born October 22, 1811, in Doborján, Kingdom of Hungary, Austrian Empire. During the Tuesday evening practice, I mentioned that he was on the playlist because it was the anniversary of his birth and that I knew some people found hope in his music (and his life story) during the Holocaust. I did not know, however, how he dealt with setbacks and/or “failures”.
Turns out, Franz Liszt lived a somewhat charmed life up until his father died unexpectedly, when Franz was 16. That is not to say that he didn’t have any bad days before that. In fact, he definitely struggled a bit over touring versus the possibility of religious life. However, after his father’s death, those struggles become all-consuming. His health suffered; he developed some bad habits (which made his health worse); he suffered his first romantic heartbreak; and even stopped playing and composing music. Eventually, however, he rallied, bounced back, and even played concerts that benefited people who had suffered great tragedies. Some credit his resilience to him cultivating a deeper spiritual/religious connection.

Any time we update something, start using a new app, or sign a contract for something, we have to acknowledge the “Terms and Conditions” provided in the agreement. We may not always read the fine print, but there is something explicitly laid out that defines expectations and consequences. In life, we don’t always have things explicitly outlined; but, the terms and conditions still exist. In Buddhism and in the Yoga Philosophy, we think of them as causes and conditions.
I have heard the Buddha discussed pratītyasamutpāda, which can be translated into English as “dependent origination”, or “dependent arising”; indicating that “if this exists, that exists; if this ceases to exist, that also ceases to exist”. Here, “this” can be a grain (or direction) of suffering and/or a grain (or direction) of wisdom. A similar rubric is outlined in the second section of the Yoga Sūtras, where Patanjali described how afflicted/dysfunctional and not-afflicted/functional thought patterns (kliṣṭākliṣṭāḥ) are like planted seeds that can lead to pain or pleasure. In both philosophies, the path to ending the causes and conditions of suffering includes meditation and right/skillful/functional thoughts, words, and deeds.
In the absence of the formal practice, both philosophies encourage cultivating the opposite.

Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. In worldly matters I will do what needs to be done, but never at the cost of losing the pristine nature of my mind. Another way to think of these terms and conditions is simply as cause and effect — which includes the consequences of our actions, as well as expectations that arise from previous experiences. Some of our expectations are based on our direct lived experiences and some are based on the expectations of other people’s experiences. All of these expectations make up our conditioning. One of the intentions behind the 2024 Saturday practices has been to take a look at our conditioning; to bring awareness to our saṃskāra (“mental impression”) and vāsanā (a literal “dwelling” place of our habits); and to notice some of the reasons why we think, speak, and do as we do.
Once we bring awareness to our conditioning, we can start contemplating future conditioning: which seeds we want to plant and which habits we want to cultivate. However, the ultimate goal of all these practices is to find the state of mind that leads to less suffering. In Buddhism, the ultimate goal is nirvāṇa (or nibbāna, in Pali). In the Yoga Sūtra 4.29, Patanjali described a particular experience of samādhiḥ as “a cloud of virtue”. Either way you think of it, less suffering means… more happiness (whatever that means to you at this moment).
For some people, “the state of being happy” is an ecstatic kind of joy; for others it is “not being miserable”; and then there is everything in between. Both Yoga and Buddhism feature practices centered around happiness. For example, the second niyama (internal observation in the Yoga Philosophy) is santosha, the practice of contentment. In Tibetan Buddhism, one of the lojong (“mind training”) techniques is “Always maintain only a joyful mind.” (#21) Again, these are practices; the jumping off points for meditation and contemplation.
What if, however, you were commanded to be happy?
FTWMI: The following is a revised/updated version of a 2020 post entitled “Be Happy, Now!”
“Be joyful at your festival – you and your son, and your daughter, and your manservant, and your maid-servant, and the Levite, and the stranger, and the orphan, and the widow who live within your city.
For seven days you must celebrate the Festival to YHVH*, your God, in the place which YHVH* shall choose, because the Lord, your God, will bless you in all your produce, and in all the work of your hands, and you will only be happy.”
(*NOTE: YHVH is commonly translated as “the Lord” in English.)

In the Torah (and the Christian Old Testament), there are a list of commandments. Mixed into that list are certain dates the faithful are commanded to observe. We think of them, in the modern context, as “holidays” and they are filled with ritual and tradition. Sometimes the mandate is general and left to interpretation (like when it says in Deuteronomy, “‘… and they shall not appear before the Lord empty: Every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the Lord thy God which he hath given thee.’” Other times, however, it is very specific about who, what, when, and even where. Sukkot, the “Festival (or Feast) of the Tabernacles (or Booths)” is one of the times where the details are specific — even when they appear vague.
For seven days, 8 in the diaspora, people within the Jewish community and people who observe the commanded holidays, eat, sleep, socialize, and sometimes work in a temporary shelter. The shelter, a sukkah, consists of three walls of any material and a roof made of natural fiber. (Natural being something grown from the earth.) In 2020, when the pandemic created so many obstacles to the ways in which people typically observed and practiced their faith here, finally, was a time when there was less challenge. Yes, true, it was still best for people [around this time in 2020] to socially distance, wear masks, wash your hands, and avoid big gatherings — but, it was also best (when gathering) to be outdoors. It’s like Sukkot was tailor-made for 2020.

One of the significant things about Sukkot is that it is a time for people to come together regardless of their circumstances, gender, religion, or political affiliation. It is a time for all to remember challenges of the past; while also celebrating better days ahead. Another especially noteworthy thing about Sukkot is the symbolism behind the rituals. For instance, one of the points of being outside in the most basic of shelters, exposed to the elements, is to remind people of the time when their ancestors were living in simple, temporary shelters when they were exiled in the desert for 40 years. It is also a good time to remember how much we have — as well as the fact that we could be happy with less. Sukkot is a reminder that life can be full, even when it is simple and bare-boned. It is a time of appreciation and it is also about accepting the present moment.
That last part — accepting the present moment — is easy to overlook. However, the commandment specifically states that the celebration occurs in a place chosen by God. In other words, we might not be where we want to be or where we thought we would be. (Hello, 2020!) This is something I point out every year, but it was especially pointed out to me in 2016, when the creamery, where I held my 2015 Sukkot retreat was no longer available… and again, in 2017, when it was no longer as easy to schedule time in the church where I held the second retreat… and again, in 2019, when the church camp I had planned to use experienced a fire and had to cancel the bulk of their season. And, then, 2020… once again, things were not as we planned — despite the fact that CP graciously offered to help me plan that year’s retreat. On the face, it might sometimes seem that we are “destined” not to observe this time — and yet, we do, every year… just not necessarily in the place that we thought.

Many people refer to Sukkot as the “Season of Happiness”, because they view the instructions in the Bible as a mandate to be happy. Since the instruction is to be joyful, or rejoice, about things that have yet to happen — blessings yet to come — one has to wonder: How can we be “independently happy” and celebrate something that hasn’t happened yet? It’s a good question. And, it turns out, there are some really good answers.
Dr. Tal Ben-Shahar, an expert in Positive Psychology and the author of Happier: Learn the Secrets to Daily Joy and Lasting Fulfillment and A Clash of Values: The Struggle for Universal Freedom, used to teach a class at Harvard University called “Happiness 101”. In his class and through his research, he offered 6 very practical tips for cultivating happiness. Those tips are featured in the practices during Sukkot (and are highlighted throughout this blog post).

How do you feel when someone you enjoy being around enters the room? Imagine someone you love, trust, and respect; someone whose light shines bright in every room they enter. Express gratitude for that person’s presence in your life and notice how that feels.
Now, how would you feel if they came bearing good news about their good fortune? Or, how would you feel if that good news was about something fortuitous that was happening for you? How do you feel when you add more gratitude to the mix?
More importantly, can you feel what you are feeling all the way down to your bones?

While some modern (Christian) translations of Mishlei/Proverbs 15:30 use the word “fat” in some way, many use words like “gives [good] health”, “refreshes”, “nourishes”, “invigorates”, “makes the bones healthy”, or “strengthens”. Others focus on the ultimate meaning: that this is about the health, prosperity, and the overall wellbeing of the person. Whichever way you view it, we all want and need strong, healthy bones: “fat” bones, if you will. The need and desire to have them and cultivate them — even “fertilize” them — becomes more important the older we get, because age can cause bone health to diminish.
In fact, years and years ago, one of my yoga-buddies, Sister Karen, forwarded me an article about studies showing that some asanas and some styles of yoga are good for bone health. Since she and some of the other people in her community are of an age where they are thinking about their bone-density, she wanted to know what I would recommend. As it turned out, the article mentioned poses that we do in almost every vinyasa practice. In fact, a typical vinyasa practice is a weight-bearing practice — which is recommended for good bone health.
Since we are taking every opportunity to express gratitude during Sukkot, give thanks if you are already doing something good for your bones!
Now, give thanks for the possibility of learning more about your bones (since the 2024 observation of World Osteoporosis Day falls during Sukkot)!
FTWMI: The following is a slightly remixed version of a 2021 post entitled “To the Bone”.

Unless something goes wrong, our bones are something we very rarely talk about. Sure, when I taught Yin Yoga on a regular basis, my quick-and-dirty explanation for the different engagement was that in vinyasa and other weight-bearing exercises, we are typically squeezing our muscle and skin into the bones, while with Yin Yoga (and Restorative) we want the muscle and skin to melt away from the bones. However, that’s not even completely accurate. While we do squeeze the muscle (and the skin) into the bones in order to move the bones, once we are holding a pose, proper alignment can give us an opportunity to relax some of the muscle and skin.
Also, I’ve done some special events where I talk about “Dem Bones” — referencing the way our bones are connected and the song (which, by the way, is virtually impossible to add to a playlist) — but, even then, I wasn’t talking about bone health. All that changed (in 2021) when I learned that October 20th is World Osteoporosis Day.
Originally conceived in 1996, by the United Kingdom’s Osteoporosis Society (and supported by the European Commission), World Osteoporosis Day has been organized by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) since 1997, and recognized by the World Health Organization since 1998. It is a day dedicated to “raising global awareness of the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease.” The 2024 theme is “Say No To Fragile Bones” and includes a year-long campaign centered around building stronger bones through movement. Of course, the campaign centers around education and awareness about the importance of bone health and what we can do — at any age or ability — to promote it.

I admire yoga’s rich history, more than five thousand years old, but I run into a few mental roadblocks in understanding concepts like grounding and spinal energy. In fact, I was sitting in my slumped-over and crooked version of the lotus position during a special yoga class taught by Bruce’s mentor Matthew Sanford, when Matthew said to a student, ‘Breathe into your spine for God’s sake!’ I had no idea what that meant. The student understood though, and he made proper adjustments. What was remarkable was that both teacher and student were in wheelchairs.”

The word “osteoporosis” comes from Greek words meaning “bone” and “passage” or “pore.” The condition causes bones to weaken form the inside out and become so fragile that the simplest things can can cause the bones to break or fracture. By “the simplest things,” I mean that someone with osteoporosis can suffer a break or a fracture when they sneeze, make a sudden movement, bump up against something, and/or experience a a minor fall or stumble. Sure, we may think about the possibility of breaking a bone when someone has a major fall; but, if your bones are brittle, even stubbing your toe on something and then catching yourself before you tumble to the ground can result in a severe injure. Keep in mind, also, that a minor fracture when you have healthy bones may or may not be a big deal. However, osteoporosis-related fractures can be life-threatening and are a major cause of pain and long-term disability.
According to the World Osteoporosis Day website, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men, age 50 years or older, will suffer an osteoporotic fracture. That works out to millions and millions of people — many of whom will not seek treatment. Additionally, statistics indicate that only about 20% of people with osteoporotic fractures are actually treated for osteoporosis. That translates into millions of people who may have a fracture or a break treated, but remain at high risk for more fractures and more breaks — and that can translate into a major drain on the healthcare system.
The older we get, the more likely we are to fall and there is sometimes a tendency to handle our bones with care. But, sometimes we go too far in our efforts to protect ourselves and actually create more risk.
The human body is designed to move and to stay mobile. Consider the fact that even when we are not moving on the outside, there are lots of things inside of us that are in constant motion. For example, the spine reacts to breathing unless something gets in the way. There’s a micro-extension when we inhale and a little bit of flexion when we exhale. This little bit of movement is one of the ways the spine stays healthy and balanced and one of the ways it supports us and our nervous system. Take away that little bit of movement and we’ve got some problems.
“Jo and I discovered that alignment and precision increase mind-body integration regardless of paralysis. The mind is not strictly confined to a neurophysiological connection with the body. If I listen inwardly to my whole experience (both my mind’s and my body’s), my mind can feel my legs.
This is one of those truths that is easy to pass by, like the existence of dinosaurs. But in fact, it should dumbfound us – that, on some level, something as simple as the more precise distribution of gravity can transcend the limits set by a dysfunctional spinal cord. When I move from a slumped position to a more aligned one, my mind becomes more present in my thighs and feet. This happens despite my paralysis. If you are currently a fairly ambulatory person, you may take your mobility for granted; you may even underestimate the fact that walking — like yoga — is a great weight-bearing exercise for the bones. Here is even more good news (that I hope you feel in your bones): Both yoga and walking include a little balance — even when you don’t realize you’re balancing.
Remember, whenever you take a step, there is a moment when you are balancing on one foot. We may not think very much of it when we are in the prime of our lives; however, being able to stand on one foot (and then hop on one foot) is an important marker in child development. A toddler has to be able to stand on one foot in order to…well, toddle. By age 5 or 6, a neurotypical child should be able to balance on one foot for about 10 seconds; jump up and land with both feet; jump over an object that is 10 inches high; hop on one foot for about 20 feet (or more); and skip. Keep in mind that “normal” falls on a spectrum when it comes to child development. There’s no hard-and-fast timeline in terms of when a child goes from balancing on one foot for 4 seconds to balancing on one foot for 20 seconds (which is a marker for someone who is 7 years old). Similarly, some kids will walk on their tiptoes long enough for it to be recognized as a balancing marker, while others will not be super invested in that experience.
The body’s ability to balance is based on continuous communication and coordination between the brain, the inner ear, eyes, muscles, and joints. These parts of our overall system, and the communication between them, make up our proprioception and vestibular systems. Proprioception is how the brain uses the muscle and joints to find the body in space. The vestibular system — sometimes called the balance center — combines that awareness of the body’s position (in reference to the elements around it) with information about speed of motion (acceleration and deceleration) that is transmitted through the inner ear and eyes. This speed of motion information is largely based on the position of the head. Change one element and we wobble, maybe even fall.

Dr. Tal Ben-Shahar, an expert in Positive Psychology and the author of Happier: Learn the Secrets to Daily Joy and Lasting Fulfillment and A Clash of Values: The Struggle for Universal Freedom, used to teach a class at Harvard University called “Happiness 101”. In his class and through his research, he offered 6 very practical tips for cultivating happiness. Those tips are featured in the practices during Sukkot (and highlighted here). They also dovetail nicely with the following five tips or steps to healthy bones and a fracture-free future, recommended by the IOF:
- EXERCISE: Exercise regularly to keep your bones and muscles moving. For bone health, focus on weight-bearing, muscle-strengthening, and balance-training exercises.
- NUTRITION: Ensure your diet is rich in bone-healthy nutrients like calcium, vitamin D, and protein. You can combine these first two elements by talking a walk (or run) outside in order to absorb a little vitamin D through safe exposure to the sun.
- LIFESTYLE: Avoid negative lifestyle habits by maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding smoking and excessive amounts of alcohol.
- RISK FACTORS: Some bone issues are genetic; so, make sure you know your family history and talk to your health care practitioner about any old fractures or bone pain. Also, talk to your health care provider about any medication that might affect your bone health.
- TESTING & TREATMENT: One of the big activities around World Osteoporosis Day is bone-strength testing for people 40 years or older and people in other high risk groups. Lifestyle changes and/or medication can help protect your bones. Furthermore, the earlier osteoporosis is detected, the effectively it can be treated.
Remember, in American English, “bad” has two meanings. Take a moment to consider what you can do so that you are “bad to the bone” in a way that is “even better than good,” rather than in a way that means your bones are “horrible” or “of quality”.

Whether we speak them, sign them, write them, and/or think them, words are anything but trivial. Words have power. As I often mention, śabda (or shabda), ranks as one of my top six siddhis or “powers.” Part of the power of words obviously comes from our understanding of them and the way we use them. More power comes from how we interact with them; how they manifest (i.e., become tangible); and how we internalize and ultimately embody them.
For example, consider what happiness means to you and how you experience the state of being “happy”. This time of year, I often mention the fact that people experience happiness in different ways. For some people it is an ecstatic kind of joy, for others it is “not being miserable”, and then there is everything in between. Since Wednesday was Erev Sukkot, the eve of what some people consider the “Season of Happiness”, I decided to get serious about the meaning of “happy.” And, any time I get “earnest” about a word, I turn to one of my favorite dictionaries: An American Dictionary of the English Language, a. k. a. Webster’s 1828 dictionary.

Noah Webster, whose name has become inextricably linked to words, understood all the different ways that words contain power — as well as the power of people sharing a language. He was born on October 16, 1758, in Hartford, Connecticut and graduated from Yale College (in 1779).The lexicographer, textbook pioneer, English-language spelling reformer and grammarian, journalist, political writer and editor, lobbyist, state representative, and author started off as a teacher. However, he quickly resigned from his initial teaching position after deciding he would be happier as a lawyer. Studying law and teaching (to earn his keep) left him so depressed that he had to take a break to regroup and find a new mentor. Unfortunately, after passing the bar exam (in 1781), he couldn’t find a job as a lawyer and went back to teaching. This time, however, the morale of the man who is remembered as the “Father of American Scholarship and Education” was affected by the the poor quality of elementary school textbooks. He was reportedly “appalled” and decided he could do better.
Noah Webster’s 3-volume collection, officially called A Grammatical Institute of the English Language, started with the “Blue-Backed Speller”, published in 1783, when the author was 25. It was organized according to a very specific pedagogy based on his theories of child development. It was also very secular in nature and highlighted American history. At the age of 26, about a year after publishing his speller, Mr. Webster published a grammar book. Finally, he published a reader in 1785, when he was 27. The proceeds of the speller, in particular, enabled him (at 43 years old) to start focusing on the production of a series of English dictionaries. In total, he would spend 26 years working on the dictionary that is now synonymous with his name.

Noah Webster’s first dictionary was a purely English dictionary. Published in 1806, he stated that it had 5,000 more words than could be found in the best English dictionaries. In 1807, Noah Webster he started working on An American Dictionary of the English Language. Completed in 1825 and published in 1828 (with a copywrite date of April 14th), it was the first American English dictionary and contained over 70,000 words — 12,000 of which had never appeared in a dictionary before, including words that were uniquely “American”* (meaning they were from Native, Indigenous, and First Nations languages and/or from languages of non-English speaking colonizers). Part of the reason it took so long to complete was that he had to learn 28 languages, including Sanskrit and Persian, in order to document the etymology of the words.
Unlike the original speller, the American dictionary had some definite religious overtones (which some historians attribute to his age). Another notable feature of Mr. Webster’s publications was that he popularized what he considered simpler, more phonetic spelling (e.g., “color” instead of “colour”, “music” instead of “musick”, “center” instead of “centre”). Of course, some of his preferred spellings never took hold. For example, most Americans use the spelling “women” versus “wimmen” or “wimen”, which Noah Webster considered more accurate. Then there is the aforenoted “chimist” instead of “chemist”.
*NOTE: While Noah Webster was one of the co-founders of the Connecticut Society for the Abolition of Slavery, he ultimately distanced himself from the abolitionist movement and went so far as to publish an American history textbook that simultaneously removed historical references to slavery, disparaged African Americans, and leaned into white nationalism. He also indicated that “slavery is a great sin and a general calamity—but it is not our sin [in the North]….”
While some view his perspective change in the 1830’s as a reaction to criticism related to certain abolitionist being against slavery but not anti-slavery, evidence of these opinions can be found in the 1828 dictionary (e.g., in certain definitions and in the lack of etymology for words directly related to certain tribes).

In addition to being the anniversary of the birth of Noah Webster, October 16th is also the anniversary of the birth of Oscar Wilde. Born Oscar Fingal O’Fflahertie Wills Wilde in 1854, in Dublin, Ireland, the poet and playwright was the author of one of my favorite books, The Picture of Dorian Gray, and wildly successful plays like A Woman of No Importance (premiered in April 1893), An Ideal Husband (premiered in January 1895), and The Importance of Being Earnest, A Trivial Comedy for Serious People (premiered in February 1895). Like so many of his works, the aforementioned novel and plays feature people living double lives specifically because there was a dramatic contrast between social expectations and private desires. This contrast — between what a person believed would make them happy versus what Victorian society defined as seriously, important and ideal (for one to be happy) — wasn’t just playing out in Oscar Wilde’s work; it was playing out in his life. Mr. Wilde was homosexual during a time when homosexuality was criminalized in Victorian society and the premiere of Earnest marked one of the professional high points and personal low points of his life.

It is a love story (or love stories) of sorts, but it is also a comedy of errors and a social satire full of love, love triangles, double entendres, double lives, mistaken identities, the dichotomy of public versus private life in Victorian society, and so many trivialities that one can hardly be blamed for questioning that about which one should be serious… or earnest. Like his other plays, Earnest was well received and marked a professional high point in Wilde’s life. However, it also marked a personal low point: Wilde’s trial, conviction, and imprisonment for homosexuality — which was illegal in Victorian England. Earnest would be the last play written by Oscar Wilde and, some would argue, his most popular.”
