Yoga is a simple practice. It’s not easy, but it is simple. Anyone can do it, if they really want to do it (and are willing to figure out the method of practice that is best for them). The first two limbs of the 8-limb philosophy make up an ethical component (similar to commandments and precepts found in other systems). The next two limbs make up the physical practice, which are a way to test out the ethics and also prepare for the higher levels of practice. The fifth limb is the segue between the first half of the practice and the second half and the last three limbs make up the meditation aspect of the practice.

See? Simple.

Yet, as simple as the practice is, it is not one-dimensional. It’s not even two-dimensional. This practice has a lot of dimensions — and sometimes it seems the deeper we go the more layers we find.

On a very basic level, it’s a physical-mental practice. Even people who say that it’s just an exercise, have to admit that you can’t exercise your body without using your mind. By that same token, we are sensational beings, which means there is an emotional component to anything that engages our minds and bodies — especially when it deliberately engages the mind-body. The works of the ancient yogis (and even the words of the modern yogis) tell us that our energy/spirit is engaged in the practice. But, let’s say you don’t want to get into that. Let’s say you just want to keep it as basic as possible. Let’s just start with the mind-body.

Although I started this post with a quote about a pig, I want you to think about a frog. Funny thing, as we know from the Yoga Sūtras, there’s a lot of space — a lot of ether — between you sensing a frog (or even the word “frog””) and your brain/mind-intellect communicating that there’s a frog. If we were to concentrate-focus-meditate on the idea of a frog, then we also have to acknowledge that there’s the word (or the thing), the meaning of the word (and the thing), plus the essence of the word (and the thing). We also have to acknowledge — and this again comes up in the sūtras — that at this given moment we are not all thinking about and/or visualizing the same frog.

Even if we only think in terms of the physical practice of yoga, there are lots of different asanas called “frog pose”. If a group is comprised of a people who all practice with the same teacher(s), who inevitable teach(es) the same set of poses and only one of them is “Frog Pose”, the likelihood that people will start moving into the same pose when it is suggested is fairly probable. However, the probability of the group immediately thinking about the same “frog pose” diminishes as people’s experience increases. I’ve actually seen this happen in a class in real time and it can cause some confusion and frustration. Sometimes people just laugh about the confusion and let the frustration go; it’s just a random pose after all. No big deal. But, imagine if people in the group thought it was a really big deal. Imagine if people were really attached to getting it “right”.

Born Narendranath Datta, on January 12,1863, Swami Vivekananda was one of nine children born into a relatively wealthy and prestigious Bengali Kayastha family. He was known as “Narendra” or “Naren” until sometime after he took his formal monastic vows at the age of 23 (on Christmas Eve 1886). Similar to Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, there were learned elders in the future swami’s family (particularly his grandfather) and he developed an interest in Indian philosophy at an early age. His interest was encouraged by his father, Vishwantha Datta, who was a lawyer and novelist, and his mother, Bhubaneswari Devi, who was a devout housewife. He had a quick mind, a phenomenal memory, and he grew up meditating to images of Shiva, Rama, Sita, and Hanuman. However, it also seems like he was very much a little kid who did little kid things.

He received high marks in school and earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1884, after studying everything from religion, philosophy, history, social science, fine arts, and literature to classical Indian music and Western logic and philosophy. I’m not sure which way his life would have gone were it not for a series of serendipitous incidences. First, he attended a lecture about William Wordsworth’s 1814 poem “The Excursion: being a portion of The Recluse, a poem”, which chronicles the life of man whose personal grief and social disillusionment causes his to choose isolation over society. In the ensuing discussion, the professor suggested that the students should visit with a mystic in order to better understand the state of a “trance”.

That mystic was Ramakrishna Paramahamsa (Gadadhar Chattopadhyaya). The two met around 1881, and while Swami Vivekananda didn’t immediately become a formal student — in fact, he disagreed with much of what Ramakrishna was teaching — he stuck around, listening to lectures and engaging in conversation. When his father died in 1884, Swami Vivekananda become a devoted and noted disciple, formally becoming a member of a newly-formed monastic order shortly before Ramakrishna’s death in 1886. By 1888, he was living the life of a “wandering monk”, surviving and traveling courtesy of the generosity of others and sharing Ramakrishna’s teachings throughout India.

“And the Yogi shows how, by junction with nature, and identifying itself with the mind and the world, the Purusha thinks itself miserable. Then the Yogi goes on to show you that the way out is through experience. You have to get all this experience, but finish it quickly. We have placed ourselves in this net, and will have to get out. We have got ourselves caught in the trap, and we will have to work out our freedom…. [Experience] leads, step by step, to that state where all things become small, and the Purusha so great that the whole universe seems as a drop in the ocean and falls off by its own nothingness. We have to go through different experiences, but let us never forget the ideal.”

As he was teaching, Swami Vivekananda was also learning. He learned about the poor and the suffering. He learned about the lived experiences of people whose fates and faiths were very different from his own. Ultimately, he was selected to share Indian philosophy with people outside of India. Beginning in the summer of 1893, he traveled to Japan, China, and Canada before reaching the United States. His primary destination in the United States was Chicago, which was hosting the World’s Fair that September.

Hundreds of formal meetings, conferences, and congresses were organized in association with the fair, including the World’s Parliament of Religions — which was the largest of the associated gatherings and the first organized interfaith gathering. In addition to delegates sharing messages from spiritual leaders like the Japanese Buddhist reformer and priest Kiyozawa Manshi (Pure Land), there were representatives from new religious movements (NRM) and some of the oldest religious movements. Representatives included the Virchand Gandhi (Jain), Anagarika Dharmapala (“Southern Buddhism”, now known as Theraveda Buddhism), Soyen Shaku (Zen Buddhism), G. Bonet Maury (a Christian, Protestant, historian), Septimus J. Hanna (Christian Science), Mohammed Alexander Russell Webb (an American covert to Islam), and Pratap Chandra Majumdar (Brahmo Samaj, an aspect of Brahmoism). William Quan Judge and Annie Besant represented the Theosophical Society; Pung Quang Yu represented several Chinese religions; and the American Presbyterian missionary Henry Harris Jessup mentioned the publicly discussed the Baháʼí Faith.

Then there was the young Swami Vivekananda, who almost didn’t make the roster because he didn’t have credentials from a bona fide organization. After contacting a Harvard professor and receiving his recommendations, the 30-year old monk was allowed to speak about Hinduism and two of the six Indian philosophies: Vedanta and Yoga. By all accounts, he was a dynamic and engaging speaker. His first speech was during the opening ceremonies on September 11, 1893, and his first words, “Sisters and brothers of America”, were reportedly met with a 2-minute standing ovation from the thousands of attendees.

Once the applause died out, he said, “It fills my heart with joy unspeakable to rise in response to the warm and cordial welcome which you have given us. I thank you in the name of the most ancient order of monks in the world; I thank you in the name of the mother of religions; and I thank you in the name of millions and millions of Hindu people of all classes and sects.” He then went on to acknowledge various religious heritages and quote from a hymn (see below) that he said, “I remember to have repeated from my earliest boyhood, which is every day repeated by millions of human beings”. He also quoted from the Bhagavad Gita and condemned “Sectarianism, bigotry, and its horrible descendant, fanaticism” and the effects of those hateful expressions.

Yet, however substantial he may think the external world in which he lives and moves, there comes a time in the lives of individuals and of races when, involuntarily, they ask, ‘Is this real?’ To the person who never finds a moment to question the credentials of his senses, whose every moment is occupied with some sort of sense-enjoyment — even to him death comes, and he also is compelled to ask, ‘Is this real?’ Religion begins with this question and ends with its answer. Even in the remote past, where recorded history cannot help us, in the mysterious light of mythology, back in the dim twilight of civilisation, we find the same question was asked, ‘What becomes of this? What is real?’”

Over the course of the conference, which ended on September 27th, Swami Vivekananda continued to speak (in public and in private sessions) about religions and philosophies prominent in India. His speeches had two common threads: universality and religious tolerance. That two-fold theme underscored the ironic fact that all the different religions had a similar goal: a deeper, richer relationship with the Divine or God (whatever that means to you at this moment — along with the fact that the different ways people pursued (and continue to pursue) their ultimate goal created strife, suffering, and wars. In other words, people’s methods were (and are) sometimes antithetical to their beliefs and therefore are obstacles along the path.

Swami Vivekananda’s lectures were well received by other religious leaders, lay attendees, and journalists. In fact, he and his words were so well received he was invited to tour the United States and then the United Kingdom. For years, he toured the U. S. and the United Kingdom, giving lectures and offering demonstrations. Just as before, Swami Vivekananda’s experiences slightly changed his focus and the way that he taught the lessons of his elders. He began to focus his efforts on establishing Vedanta centers that would continue and extend the legacy of his spiritual elders.

He founded the Vedanta Society of New York in 1894; the Ramakrishna Mission in Calcutta (1897), which included the Ramakrishna Math; two monasteries; two journals; and an English language monthly magazine. He also wrote several books, including Raja Yoga (which includes translation and commentary of Patanjali’s Yoga Sūtras intended for a Western audience), and translated some of the work that had inspired him, including the Yoga Sūtras and De Imitatione Christi (The Imitation of Christ), a Christian devotional by the medieval canon Thomas à Kempis. Swami Vivekananda inspired others to live with an awareness of their interconnectedness. He also inspired others to teach and to practice their beliefs through action (karma yoga). He is considered a patriotic saint in India and, since it was declared so in 1984, his birthday is celebrated as “National Youth Day” in India.

The 2022 theme for National Youth Day was “It’s all in the mind”, which like previous themes is based on Swami Vivekananda’s teachings. The 2024 and 2025 themes focus on the power of youth.

“I will tell you a little story. You have heard the eloquent speaker who has just finished say, ‘Let us cease from abusing each other,’ and he was very sorry that there should be always so much variance.

But I think I should tell you a story which would illustrate the cause of this variance. A frog lived in a well. It had lived there for a long time. It was born there and brought up there, and yet was a little, small frog. Of course the evolutionists were not there then to tell us whether the frog lost its eyes or not, but, for our story’s sake, we must take it for granted that it had its eyes, and that it every day cleansed the water of all the worms and bacilli that lived in it with an energy that would do credit to our modern bacteriologists. In this way it went on and became a little sleek and fat. Well, one day another frog that lived in the sea came and fell into the well.

Then the frog took another leap and asked, ‘Is your sea so big?’

That has been the difficulty all the while.

I am a Hindu. I am sitting in my own little well and thinking that the whole world is my little well. The Christian sits in his little well and thinks the whole world is his well. The Mohammedan sits in his little well and thinks that is the whole world. If you travel and/or if you read, you know that traveling and reading can open up your horizons and your consciousness. You can learn about people, cultures, and so many things you would not encounter if you never left home and/or never opened up to someone else’s stories. I love both reading and traveling, but I also acknowledge that there are challenges to both and that I haven’t loved every place I’ve traveled or every book I’ve read. I have also travelled and/or shared books with people who didn’t enjoy the same things I did (and vice versa). Despite the challenges, I think we are all richer for the experiences.

Since today is the third day of Banned Books Week (September 22–28, 2024) and the second day of International Week of the Deaf (IWD), we are ready to take another step (or two) in our philosophical journey. But let’s back up a minute and consider how this is all connected. First, both of these observations, as well as the practice of the Yoga Philosophy, are ultimately about freedoms. We could even say they are also all about powers.

As I mentioned yesterday, the 2024 Banned Books Week theme is “Freed Between the Lines” and the 2024 IWD theme isSign Up for Sign Language Rights” — with this second day placing extra emphasis on inclusion education and the rights of Deaf children. In the Yoga Sūtras, Patanjali indicated that everything in the known world has a two-fold purpose: to be experienced and for that experience to lead to our freedom / liberation. (YS 2.18) This means that even things and people we don’t like and/or don’t understand can serve a purpose — if we pay attention. And that’s why I said that the first step is paying attention (and the willingness to pay attention).

According to Yoga Sūtras 1.17-18, there are four basic levels of conscious awareness: gross, subtle, bliss, and I-ness. All of which are the stages of growing awareness that can lead to complete absorption. One of my favorite analogies with regard to this thread breaks down what happens when you walk into a room. The gross level is noticing that music is playing; the subtle level is when you start noticing the details of the song — melody, harmony, beat, lyrics — and realize that you recognize the song; the bliss level is when you start singing (and maybe dancing) and really start to enjoy the experience. Finally, the I-ness is when you start forgetting everything that is not part of this experience.

I have mentioned that some aspect of this analogy applies even if you don’t (or can’t) hear the music, because you can still feel the vibration and maybe notice other people’s experience of the music. However, since it is International Week of the Deaf, it might be better to use the first analogy quoted above.

But, what if you don’t travel (or hate Los Angeles)? Then, we can use the physical practice as a comparison point. For example, if you observe someone (or learn about someone) practicing a yoga pose, your awareness is brought to the fact that something is happening. If you start practicing the pose yourself, you start breaking down the mechanics (which is the subtle stage). At some point, you find what works for you, you start focusing on your breath, the pose starts to feel good, and you start moving into that deep state of focus where you are no longer distracted by outside elements.

That fourth state of consciousness is connected to an object (the music, the pose, your breath, the benefits and effects on your body, etc.). However, at some point, that “single-pointed focus” can become “seedless focus,” meaning your mind no longer needs an object as an anchor. The practice also includes the ability to tap into your innate vitality and powers, including the siddhis described as “powers unique to being human.” So, if the first step is paying attention (and the willingness to pay attention), then the next step is using those powers — with each power becoming a step towards the next power.

Accessing and utilizing all of your powers comes with responsibilities. I think that one of those responsibilities is to tell your story (even if you are just telling it to yourself). Another is the responsibility to pay attention to other people’s stories — or, at the very least, not to invalidate their stories. Each of those responsibilities comes with challenges; however, if you take your time, step-by-step, you are prepared to meet those challenges.

By focusing on the rights of Deaf children, the second day of IWD highlights the importance of  “quality multilingual inclusive education that provides deaf learners inclusion through national sign languages.”

As explained above, the Declaration on the Rights of Deaf Children consists of ten articles. Those ten articles are not only valid with regard to Deaf Children, they are also valid (and important) with regard to children from all over the world — and especially those who are dealing with trauma, loss, and disabilities, while also navigating a new language (or two).

Afghan-American author Khaled Hosseini’s first novel, The Kite Runner, features a young boy (Amir) who falls into that latter category. The book is not on the most recent “Top 10 Most Challenged Books,” which is published annually by the American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF). However, it has been on the list in multiple years — in particular, when the book first came out and again when the movie adaptation premiered. Even though it is not on the most recent Top 10 list, it is still challenged quite a bit — and it gets challenged by people from every community mentioned in the book!

Beginning in the Wazir Akbar Khan district of Kabul, The Kite Runner tells the story of what happens to Amir, his family, his dear friend Hassan, and their communities during the fall of Afghanistan’s monarchy, the Soviet invasion, the exodus of refugees to Pakistan and the United States, and the rise of the Taliban regime. It is beautifully written, but is also full of really hard, tragic, and horrific events. In fact, one could argue that the caliber of writing makes the hard, tragic, and horrific events even more so. It is not something I would recommend to everyone and anyone; however, I did benefit from reading it.

What is as interesting to me as the book itself, is the fact that people have very different opinions about the point and focus of the book. I personally find it hard to engage in a conversation with someone who objects to a book or library service without actually reading the book and/or using the service; however, I get that it is easy to fear what we don’t know. The thing is, this is one person’s fictionalized account of their life experiences. Additionally, Mr. Hosseini has said that the main focus of the book is the relationship between a parent and a child and the life lessons the parent teaches their child — something about which many people know and value.

Yoga Sutra 2.18: prakāśkriyāsthitiśīlam bhūtendriyāmakam bhogāpavargārtham dŗśyam

— “The objective world (what is seen), consisted of a combination of elements and senses, and having a nature of illumination, activity, and stability, has two purposes: fulfillment and freedom.

According to Indian Philosophies, like Yoga and Sāmkhya, we humans are capable of extraordinary things. Some siddhis (“abilities”) are so out of the ordinary they seem like Marvel Universe powers or Jedi Knight Tricks. Then, there are six described in the Sāmkhya Karika as “powers unique to being human.” Even if we just stick to those six — which can seem mundane on the surface, using those powers can create, heal, and transform everything and everyone around us.

Unfortunately, according to these same philosophies, we are disempowered by cittavŗtti (“fluctuations of the mind”) and avidyā (“ignorance”). This disempowerment can lead to really obvious signs and ailments, like those listed in the Yoga Sūtras 1.30 – 1.31, as well as in the inability to access the siddhis which are part of “true nature.” Even more tragic is the fact that (a) most people don’t realize these powers are inside of them and all around them and (b) that people are often looking for power in the wrong places.

In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna warned Arjuna — again and again — about thinking there is only one way to be devoted and only one way to serve. Chapter 18 even outlines the personalities, dispositions, and responsibilities of Seers, Leaders, Providers, and Servers. There is even detailed descriptions about how each role serves the larger community. But, you know who is missing — or, at least not explicitly described?

Someone with a rainbow afro or a cowboy hat, a red nose, a tie-dye shirt, overalls, and a “Nobody for President” button. In other words, a person that must be embraced with conscious “phun.”

Born Hugh Nanton Romney on May 15, 1936, the official clown of the Grateful Dead is not related to the political Romney family. However, as an activist for peace and a hippie (not to mention a self-proclaimed “flower geezer”) he has had a hand in politics and even organized a presidential campaign.

Romney and his wife, Jahanara “Jah” Romney, co-founded Hog Farm, America’s longest running hippie commune, in the 1960’s. They first made it onto the world’s radar when volunteers from Hog Farm provided security for the 1st Woodstock Rock Festival (August 15 – 18, 1969). The Hog Farm volunteers called themselves the “Please Force” — as in, “Please don’t do that, please do this instead.” While providing similar service at the Texas International Pop Festival (09/01/1969), Romney met B. B. King,* who gave him the name “Wavy Gravy.”

Wavy Gravy, co-founded the Phurst Church of Phun, a secret society of comics and clowns dedicated to ending the Vietnam War, because he thought activists dressed as clowns would be less likely to be arrested. In 1980, he ran a “Nobody for President” campaign that included a November 4th rally across from the White House. The campaign “staff” of Yippies (from the Youth International Party) and anarchists mostly promoted the “none of the above” option on the ballot. However, the campaign was known for slogans like “Nobody’s Perfect;” “Nobody Keeps All Promises;” “Nobody Should Have That Much Power;” and “Who’s in Washington right now working to make the world a safer place? Nobody!” He also proclaimed that “Nobody makes apple pie better than Mom. And Nobody will love you when you’re down and out.”

In 1975, Wavy Gravy and Jah founded Camp Winnarainbow, which is a “socially minded, justice focused organization” dedicated to “[doing] something good for a change.” Part of the Hog Farm community, Camp Winnarainbow offers some Adult Camps; 3-year Teen Leadership Programs (for ages 15, 16, and 17); Residential Camps (for ages 7 – 17); and scholarships (some of which used to be funded by proceeds of Ben and Jerry’s “Wavy Gravy” ice cream). While they had to cancel some programming in 2020 (for the first time in 45 years), Camp Winnarainbow was able to move some programs online and safely continue some of their outdoor programming. The programs are committed to “Big Fun” as well as equity, inclusion, and interdependence — not only in theory, but also in practice. Some of the graduates of the Teen Leadership Programs are preparing to take on leadership roles at for future camps and programming.

In 1978, Wavy Gravy and Jahanara Romney joined Dr. Larry Brilliant, Dr. Girija Brilliant, Dr. Nicole Grasset, Ram Dass, and Dr. G. Venkataswamy in co-founding the Seva Foundation. The Brilliants’ had successfully helped eradicate smallpox and were looking for a new initiative. Knowing that over a billion people live with unaddressed vision impairments; that hundreds of millions of underserved people need ongoing eye care; and that 90% of all vision impairment can be prevented or cured, the Seva Foundation grew out of the belief that restoring sight is one of the most effective ways to relieve suffering and reduce poverty. The global non-profit eye organization works with local communities around the world to train local eye-care providers and develop self-sustaining programs that preserve and restore sight.

The Seva Foundation’s name comes from the Indian concept of “self-less service.” The organization provides critical eye care to underserved communities (especially women, children, and indigenous populations) and has provided surgeries, eyeglasses, medicine, and other eye care services to over 44 million people in over 20 countries — including Tibet, Nepal, Cambodia, Bangladesh, Sub-Sahara Africa, and the United States. One of their highlighted programs is Guatemala Brillando (“Brighter Guatemala”), which “is poised to establish five new hospitals and 30 vision centers bringing primary eye care to rural and other areas that are currently underserved. Seva will develop sustainable programs which create jobs for local women and men to help them provide critical services to their home communities.”

Annual benefits for Camp Winnarainbow and the Seva Foundation include some of the same musicians that appeared at the Woodstock Festivals: the Grateful Dead, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, David Crosby and Graham Nash, Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks, Ani DiFranco, Ben Harper, Elvis Costello, Michael Franti and Spearhead, Sly and the Family Stone — and, of course, the Woodstock Festivals Master of Ceremonies, Wavy Gravy.

Before class, my friend Meghan used to always ask, “What are we doing in class today?” My answer, every time, was exactly the same: Yoga. If I was feeling very cheeky, I might have said, “haṭha yoga,” but what does that even mean? What makes a particular positioning of the body – or a sequence of positions – yoga versus gymnastics or dance or calisthenics or step aerobics? Since John Venn was born today in 1834, we could use his diagrams to identify three elements that distinguish the physical practice of yoga, haṭha yoga (regardless of the style or tradition), from other disciplines.

The first circle is the position of the body (i.e., the asana (“seat” or pose)). The second circle is specific breathing (i.e., prānāyāma (awareness of breath or extension of breath), which is not commonly found outside of yoga. Focus or intention might be considered a third point of intersection, because there is a specific purpose to the practice of yoga. While people practice yoga for different reasons – and some people do other things for those same reasons, the physical practice of yoga is (classically) intended to prepare a person for deep, seated meditation. Since we have different minds, bodies, and circumstances, it makes since that there are different practices. However, many styles and traditions use the same shapes and breathing techniques. So, what distinguishes the different practices? For a moment, let’s consider energy.

Traditionally, all physical practices are (in some way) connected to a medical science and we could break things down according to these types of energetic mapping. For example, there are practices based on Āyurveda as it comes to us from India; there are practices based on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM); and there are practices rooted in African science. There are also modern practices that are derived from the aforementioned medical arts and tied to modern science and/or religious mysticism. Right now, however, I am not talking about the energetic vitality of the mind-body. Here, I am focusing on the level of physical activity.

“Paul B, one of my first yoga teachers, said that our yoga practice should be the ‘most intense’ part of our day. Some people hearing that or reading that might find that really appealing, ‘Ooo, I want that kind of practice!’ Others may be immediately turned off – for the exact same reason others get turned on. But, the practices with Paul B might not be what either group expects. In fact, his classes were the reason I always wanted to go deeper.”

There are practices with a lot of movement and practices with little to no movement. However, within each of those categories, there are practices that are physically active and practices that are more actively relaxing. Very vigorous practices include Hot Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga, and some forms of vinyasa (like Power Yoga and Forrest Yoga). I would also put AcroYoga and Aerial Yoga in the vigorous box; however, they could be considered more moderate. Similarly, ViniYoga and Iyengar Yoga might be considered moderate, because they require active movement, but are not super vigorous. All of the above are weight-bearing exercises and can build strength.

Yin Yoga can have have elements of Tai chi and Qigong (both of which I would put in the moderate category), but there is not a lot of movement in pure Yin Yoga. This TCM-based practice cultivates dynamic tension, which makes it more active than a Restorative Yoga practice (which is based on Iyengar Yoga). On the flip side, when we think of yin as “softness” and yang as “hardness,” some teachers consider Restorative Yoga more “yang” than Yin Yoga. Similarly, micromovements place SomaYoga and Somatic Yoga (including Gentle Somatic Yoga) in between Yin Yoga and Restorative Yoga. That little bit of movement can be continuous (similar to vinyasa), but it is not vigorous. These moderate to low (or no) activity practices are not considered weight-bearing.

To be clear, all of the aforementioned practices can be considered energetic practices (based on how they engage the vitality of the mind-body. However, within their traditions, Tantra Yoga, Kundalini Yoga, Kemetic Yoga (also known as Egyptian Yoga or African Yoga, which includes Sema Tawy), and Svaroopa Yoga are considered “energetic” practices (not physical practices). If we look at them from a physical standpoint, Tantra Yoga can be tied to practices in the vigorous circle and, also, to practices that (physically) feel more like Restorative Yoga. Kundalini Yoga has kriyās that are extremely vigorous and, also, kriyās that feel more restorative – and everything in between. The different traditions of Kemetic Yoga can also run the gamut in terms of activity level. Svaroopa Yoga is sometimes referred to as a restorative practice and takes it’s name from Yoga Sutra 1.3. Additionally, all of these types of practice can feature some weight-bearing poses.

Yoga Sūtra 1.3: tadā draştuh svarūpe’vasthānam

– “[When the fluctuations of the mind are mastered] the Seer abides/rests in their own true nature.”

In theory, you can draw a Venn diagram of any pose or sequence, breathing (or a specific type of pranayama), and energy level based on what I’ve outlined above. Keep in mind that many poses (or shapes of said poses) are found in all the different practices. Additionally, you will find that some practices – especially very vigorous practices, like some vinyasa – have different levels of activity at different points in the practice and that those energy levels can be used to create a specific effect (i.e., stimulated, relaxed, balanced). We can use different words to describe the different levels of activity, just as we can use different words to describe the different effects of the poses and sequences. Note, however, that all the descriptions are just different ways to describe the gunas. Finally, the end effect is what we find in the space where all the circles overlap.

That’s yoga, where everything comes together.

Example of “Householder” props: 1 – 2 blankets or bath towels, 2 – 3 books (similar in size), 2 standard pillows (or 1 body pillow), a belt/tie/sash, and a face towel.

You may want extra layers (as your body may cool down during this practice). Having a wall, chair, sofa, or coffee table may be handy.

It’s scary to let go of something (or someone) to which you are attached. It’s scary because that attachment – whether it is rooted in pleasure or rooted in pain – is part of how we see and understand the world. It’s part of how we see and understand ourselves. The attachment is what is known. And what is unknown can be frightening.

What if, however, we accept the basic premise of Eastern philosophies, like Yoga and Buddhism? What if we accept that we don’t truly see ourselves (or others) as we are? What if we recognize that our attachments are rooted in ignorance? What happens if we let go of our attachments?

Yoga Sūtra 2.13: sati mūle tadvipāko jātyāyurbhogāḥ

– “As long as the root cause [i.e., the five afflicted thought patterns] persists, karmas must bear fruit, and that fruition determines birth in a particular species, life span, and life experience.”

In June 2020, I posted an entry that detailed some harsh and brutal moments in history. Over the years, I have used softer, warmer titles to invite people into a philosophical conversation about avidyā (“ignorance” or nescience), but the original title has stuck with me. The title was a question that I often ask myself and others: “How Ignorant Are You?”

The title is not the only thing that I remember. It’s not the only thing that has stuck, if you will. I also remember those harsh and brutal moments in history. They don’t get softer and warmer just because I change the title. Reality – when the facts are laid bare – is stark and brutal. A softer lead doesn’t change the Truth.

That is not to say that there is no beauty in this day (throughout history). Nor is it to say that there is no beauty in the practice. However, if we ignore the paths that lead to ignorance, we create more harm. We may also trample over the beauty without seeing it.

It is up to you if you read the rest of this post. However, even if you skip to the end (or the next orange quote), please consider the question. Sit with the question.

Yoga Sūtra 2.3: Avidyāsmitārāgadveşābhiniveśāh kleśāh

– “Ignorance (or lack of knowledge), false sense of self, attachment (rooted in pleasure), aversion (which is attachment rooted in pain), and fear of death or loss are the afflicted thoughts.”

– “The union of the seer and the seeable is the cause of pain (that may be avoidable).”

Prepare yourself for some information that may seem surprisingly harsh and brutal. (Fair warning, some of this may be difficult to read.)

Yesterday (6/11) was the anniversary of formation of the Committee of Five. Consisting of John Adams (Massachusetts), Roger Sherman (Connecticut), Robert Livingston (New York), Benjamin Franklin (Pennsylvania), and Thomas Jefferson (Virginia), the committee was charged, back in 1776, with drafting a document which would be approved by the Second Continental Congress and presented to England as a Declaration of Independence. The committee worked from July 11th until July 5thand, contrary to what many believe, the approved document was signed over the next several months by the various delegates. There was no single day of signing.

Both the fact that people believe there was a single day of signing, as well as the fact that the committee excluded their original language criticizing slavery, is a sign of ignorance. The fact that a declaration of independence stating, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness….” did not consider that those truths applied to women and people of color is a sign of ignorance – that has led to suffering.

Today (6/12) was the anniversary of the birth of a young girl. Born in Frankfurt, Germany in 1929, Anne Frank received her diary (“Kitty”) on her 13th birthday. She filled her notebooks with descriptions of the tragic and the hopeful things around her. She died in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp at the age of 14. Her death, as well as the deaths of her family, friends, community, and millions of others is a sign of ignorance.

“It’s difficult in times like these: ideals, dreams and cherished hopes rise within us, only to be crushed by grim reality. It’s a wonder I haven’t abandoned all my ideals, they seem so absurd and impractical. Yet I cling to them because I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart. I simply can’t build my hopes on a foundation of confusion, misery, and death. I hear the approaching thunder that, one day, will destroy us too. I feel the suffering of millions. And yet, when I look up at the sky, I somehow feel that this cruelty too shall end, and that peace & tranquility will return once again.”

Today was also the anniversary of the 1963 assassination of Medgar Evers. Mr. Evers was an African American civil rights activist in Mississippi who worked as the state’s field secretary for the NAACP; worked to overturn segregation; and worked to ensure voters’ rights. He was shot (in the back and clear through the heart) in his front yard by a member of the Ku Klux Klan and the White Citizens’ Council.

The fact that Mr. Evers had to do the work he did, as well as the fact that he was killed for doing that work, is a sign of ignorance. The fact that two all-white juries failed to convict the person who killed him is also a sign of ignorance. The fact that Medgar Evers and his wife, Myrlie Evers, had to teach their young children (ages: 3, 7, and 9) how to tell the difference between firecrackers and gunshots, as well as how to hide when they heard gunshots, is a sign of ignorance. The fact that many people don’t know about the thousands who marched in protest after Medger Evers was killed is also a sign of ignorance.

Today was also the anniversary of the 1967 United States Supreme Court decision in Loving v. Virginia. The court declared that any state laws prohibiting interracial marriage were unconstitutional. The fact that states like Virginia had considered people like Richard Loving (a white man) and his wife Mildred Loving (a black and Indigenous American woman) to be criminals – even sentencing them to prison – is a sign of ignorance. The fact that they faced hate from people in their community is a sign of ignorance.

Today, in 2016, a man walked into the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida, and started shooting. Pulse was a gay nightclub that often held theme nights which attracted a wide variety of people. The club was holding just such a theme night when the man killed 49 people and wounded over 50 others in what was the deadliest (single) incident of violence against LGBTQIA+ in the United States and the second deadliest terrorist attack on U. S. soil since 9/11. Until the Las Vegas shooting in October 2017, it was the deadliest single mass gunman shooting in U. S. history.

The fact that the shooting happened, that people couldn’t just go out for an evening of music and dancing with family and friends, is a sign of ignorance. The fact that a little over a year later there would be another mass shooting is a sign of ignorance. The fact that there have been countless other mass shooting events before and since, is a sign of ignorance.

To show the world that [being LGBTQ] is more than a label – these are people that were loved, they were caring, they were human and these hate crimes are just totally uncalled for. Unnecessary. We are here because God created us and he created us all equal – and some people don’t seem to have this kind of vision. I don’t know what kind of world they want to live in.”

Even without knowing the fundamentals of Yoga Philosophy, we can see the correlation between dysfunctional/afflicted thoughts and actions and suffering. As indicated in earlier sūtras (see above), the first afflicted thought pattern is the bedrock for all the others: ignorance. The sūtras below go deeper into the nature of ignorance and into how/why we are all ignorant in some ways. Going deeper may help you answer the question, “How ignorant are you?”

Going deeper also creates the opportunity to not be so ignorant and, therefore, to not be the source of so much suffering. Because, you see, we are all the source of some suffering in the world.

Yoga Sūtra 2.23: svasvāmiśaktyoh svarūpopalabdhihetuh samyoga

– “The union (yoga), alliance, or relationship between our power to see (and what we see) is the way to experiencing our own true nature.”

Yoga Sūtra 2.24: tasya heturavidyā

Happy Mother’s Day to all of the moms. No matter how you came to be a mom (or what your kiddos call you), you are a powerful force in the world and represent a powerful Force in the world. The Mother archetype is present in every life story, every healing story, and in every religious and cultural story or myth. In the monomyth (or “Hero’s Journey”), the Mother can represent life, death, and time; nurturing, nourishment, and protection; unconditional love, acceptance, and devotion; as well as unselfishness. The Mother can present as the Matriarch, as Mother Nature/Gaia, as a Fairy Godmother, or as a Divine Mother/Goddess. The Mother can be seen as the Good Mother, the Working Mother (which opens up into a whole host of other archetypes), the Stay-at-Home Mother, the Perfect Mother, the Devoted Mother. the Co-Dependent Mother, the Abusive Mother, the Abandoning Mother, the Critical Mother, or the Hovering/Helicopter Mother.

I used the word “or” for the aforementioned archetypal patterns; because, in many stories, maternal figures are often portrayed as one-dimensional. In real life, however, mothers can be more than one thing… simultaneously – and sometimes in ways that may seem contradictory. In real life, mothers are people: they love, they hope, they desire, they fear, and the fit into so many boxes it doesn’t even make sense to put them into a box… let alone to regulate them to a single day.

And yet, here we are… Mother’s Day in the United States.

“I hope and pray that someone, sometime, will found a memorial mother’s day commemorating her for the matchless service she renders to humanity in every field of life. She is entitled to it.”

I added that “in the United States,” because for years I willfully ignored the fact that other countries – not to mention, a variety of religions – celebrate Mother’s Day at other times during the year and in very different ways than the way the observation has evolved here in the US. While I don’t know if I will ever go back to teaching on Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, I will continue to offer the 2020 recordings for those who are on my Sunday mailing list (or who request the recording via a comment below or (for a slightly faster reply) you can email me at myra (at) ajoyfulpractice.com.).

Since Mother’s Day falls on George Lucas’s birthday in 2023, I am also sending the Sunday mailing list an opportunity to consider how being a mother is it’s own “Hero’s Journey.” The May 14, 2022, practice does not specifically focus on mothers in movies by George Lucas. However, take note of how motherhood checks all the monomyth boxes, beginning with “The Call” and moving through “The Return.”

It is not the point of the story – and, in some ways it doesn’t matter – however, today I am wondering “Which foot?”

According to the Talmud a potential convert to Judaism went to two famous rabbis of the 1st century and asked to be taught the whole Torah while standing on one foot.* Rabbi Shammai insulted the man and threw him out. Rabbi Hillel (the Elder) taught a lesson about respect, which some commentators say is also love.

Respect/love that’s the important part of the story. However, today, I am also wondering about which foot. Because, which foot determines which leg and which hip bear the weight of the lesson – and which leg and hip, represents the (symbolic) foundation of the teaching.

As I often mention this time of year, Jewish mysticism (Kabbalah) indicates that the Tree of Life has ten sefirot (“emanations,” attributes, or manifestations) of the Divine – seven of which are associated with the body. For instance, the right leg/thigh is associated with the fourth attribute, Netzach, meaning “endurance,” “sustainability,” “victory,” and “persistence.” Meanwhile, the left leg/thigh is associated with Hod, which can be defined as “humility,” “gratitude,” “splendor,” and “glory.” I often reference this in relation to the Counting of the Omer, a 7-week period of prayer and reflection which begins on the second night of Passover. Each night, for 49 days, people count the days of the Omer and reflect on a combination of two of the sefirot.

We’re heading towards the end of the fifth week; and so, the focus is on how each attribute – lovingkindness, strength, balance, endurance, humility, bonding, and stewardship – shows up in relation to Hod. Sunset on Monday marked the beginning of Lag B’Omer (or Lag LaOmer) – Day 33 of (or in) the Omer, which is Hod She’b’Hod. The 33rd day has an extra special significance and is treated differently from the other days. The reason it’s different is related to hope – gained, lost, and regained – and, also, to that first lesson regarding respect/love.

They said by way of example that Rabbi Akiva had twelve thousand pairs of students in an area of land that stretched from Gevat to Antipatris in Judea, and they all died in one period of time, because they did not treat each other with respect.

I often refer to Counting the Omer as a preparation ritual, similar to other observations and celebrations that fit within the rubric of kriya yoga. What I don’t often mention is that the beginning of the 7 weeks is also a period of mourning related to Rabbi Akiva’s 24,000 students and the lost hope that their deaths represent. Obviously, so many people being lost at once would be devastating and heartbreaking. However, the communal hopelessness is also related to the fact that the 24,000 were preparing for the return of the Temple.

Yet, somehow, despite focusing on the scholarly aspects of their faith, they got it wrong.

How? How could so many students of Torah not respect/love one another properly? How could so many students of one of the greatest rabbis not understand a foundational element of their teaching? According to some commentary, they did not love those that had different opinions and perspectives. Rather than learning from one another, they believed they could only respect/love those who shared the same views. So the were struck down by a plague.

Some scholars say the plague that killed them was an actual disease (as it is indicated in the text); others say it was a metaphor for war against the Roman Empire. Either way, Lag B’Omer (or Lag LaOmer) is the anniversary of the day when the plague ended – or when a revolt led by Simon Bar Kokhba achieved a victory against the Roman Empire. It is also the anniversary of the death one of the students from Rabbi Akiva’s second cohort: Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, whose life is celebrated as a symbol of hope for the future.

All the activities people put on hold during the period of mourning, resume on the 33rd Day of the Omer. Additionally, some people will make a pilgrimage to sacred sites. In some communities, people build bonfires to symbolize the ways in which people marked the beginning of the holidays and the sabbath in medieval times and the fires Bar Kokhba’s soldiers would have used to communicate. (Similarly, children may use toy boy and arrows to reenact the revolt.) Bonfires and torches are also symbolic of the mystical fire that surrounded Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai as he shared his wisdom of the Torah on his last day. Finally, the fires symbolize the light of the Torah and the return of that light to the Jewish people.

They are a reminder that Rabbi Akiva didn’t give up – even when all were lost and he hit the proverbial wall.

And the world was desolate of Torah until Rabbi Akiva came to our Rabbis in the South and taught his Torah to them. This second group of disciples consisted of Rabbi Meir, Rabbi Yehuda, Rabbi Yosei, Rabbi Shimon, and Rabbi Elazar ben Shamua. And these are the very ones who upheld the study of Torah at that time. Although Rabbi Akiva’s earlier students did not survive, his later disciples were able to transmit the Torah to future generations.”

My friend Bob P once told me this joke: “There are two kinds of people in a kayak, the people that just fell out and the people who are about to fall out.” I find his joke is a pretty apropos metaphor for that feeling of “hitting the wall” during [the] pandemic; if you haven’t hit the wall, you’re about to hit the wall. The same can be said for some of life’s greatest heartaches. While it might seem trite to suggest that you can tell a lot about a person by how they get over/under/around/through the wall, it doesn’t change the fact that [what we’ve been through and are going through] is all part of our circumstances and, to paraphrase José Ortega y Gasset, we are (in part) our circumstances.

Born in Spain, today (May 9th) in 1883, Ortega y Gasset was an existential philosopher and writer, as well as a bit of an activist/social reformer, who believed that life was simultaneously fate and freedom, but that freedom could only be experienced within a given fate. In other words, we must play the hand we’re dealt – but, and this is key, we decide what game we’re playing with the hand we’re dealt. In fact, Ortega y Gasset encouraged actively deciding and creating a “project of life” and, in doing so, create meaning not only for one’s self, but also for others.

Yoga Sūtra 2.18: prakāśkriyāsthitiśīlam bhūtendriyāmakam bhogāpavargārtham dŗśyam

– “The objective world (what is seen), consisted of a combination of elements and senses, and having a nature of illumination, activity, and stability, has two purposes: fulfillment and freedom.

Yoga Sūtra 2.19: viśeşāviśeşalingamātrālingāni guņaparvāņi

– The “gunas” fall into four categories: specific/identifiable, unspecific/unidentifiable, barely describable (by signs), and absolutely indescribable (because it is beyond reference)

It may seem strange, even counterintuitive to some, to draw parallels between the work of 20th century existential philosophers and psychologists (or psychoanalysts) and the work of the ancient yogis (and medieval rabbis). Yet, remember, Patanjali, Vyasa, and the authors of the sacred texts like the Upanishads were explaining their life experiences – just like modern day existentialists – and codifying their life philosophies. When you get right down to it, all of this comes down to an understanding of the nature of things and the nature of ourselves. So, once again, we are back to the same two questions: “Who are you?” and “Where does the world come from?”

José Ortega y Gasset was a strong proponent of creating one’s world and being an active creator rather than a passive receiver. The second section/chapter of the yoga sutras (“The Foundation on Practice”) begins by focusing on how we are creating our world and our experiences in the world – sometimes unconsciously.

“Life cannot wait until the sciences may have explained the universe scientifically. We cannot put off living until we are ready. The most salient characteristic of life is its coerciveness: it is always urgent, “here and now” without any possible postponement. Life is fired at us point-blank. And culture, which is but its interpretation, cannot wait any more than can life itself.”

During the darkest times of the year, people all over the world celebrate light. In each culture’s stories and traditions, light overcoming darkness is a metaphor for good overcoming evil; life overcoming death, wisdom overcoming fear; love overcoming hate; hope overcoming despair, and knowledge overcoming ignorance.  This year, the celebrations kick off with Diwali, the Indian festival of lights.

Diwali is a five-day celebration which takes its name from Deepavali, which are rows and rows of lamps. It is a lunar calendar based holiday observed throughout India, parts of Southeast Asia, and the diaspora by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and Newar Buddhists. Each day has different rituals and customs, which may vary between religious, cultural, and regional traditions. But, the common threads are the (clay) lamps and other great displays of light; pujas (“offerings”); feasts and sweets; epic tales of heroes and heroines prevailing; and a focus on relationships and also on wealth.

While some communities start earlier, most people’s Diwali celebrations begin with Dhanteras, a day that the Indian ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy designated as “National Ayurveda Day” (in 2016). Many will make puja (“an offering”) to Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, fertility and abundant crops, and overall good fortunate. People will also create decorations, including rangolas, which are associated with Laksmi; clean their homes; and buy something new – usually gold, silver, clothes, and gadgets. This year, this first day of Diwali coincides with a very modern light-related anniversary: Thomas Edison’s light bulb moment.

We often think of “ah-ha” or “eureka” moments, light bulb moments, and epiphanies as being sudden and unexpected. In fact, the word “epiphany” comes to us from Greek (by way of Middle English, Latin, and in some sense Old French) from a word that means “reveal.”And, one of the definitions is “a moment of sudden revelation or insight” – reinforcing the idea that something is happening in the snap of a finger. The reality, however, is that there is a back story to ah-ha moments, epiphanies, and even the Epiphany.

Consider that The Three Magi don’t follow the star from the East to honor “‘the child who has been born king of the Jews’” if there isn’t a foundation of faith. Theoretically, without his background in science, Ian Fleming would have returned to his lab and thrown out the culture plates he had forgotten to clean when he left for his 2-week vacation in 1928. Without all his previous years of research, he wouldn’t have known what he was looking at and he wouldn’t be credited with discovering penicillin. Then there is Thomas Edison, who had a lot of “light bulb moments.”

Thomas Alva Edison, born February 11, 1847, didn’t invent electric lights (or even light bulbs). They already existed when he set up his Menlo Park, New Jersey lab in 1876, but electric lights were too bright for household use, burned too quickly, and could be dangerous when they melted. So, most people just stuck with gaslights. The problem with gaslight was that it was also dangerous and didn’t provide consistent light (because it flickered). Edison decided he could do better… he just had to invent the infrastructure to safely bring electricity into people’s homes, interior fixtures, and some kind of cost-effective and efficient bulb. The bulb, it turned out, was the rub.

Edison and his team spent several months working 16 – 18 hours at a stretch and testing at least 1,600 different materials – including fishing line, coconut fibers, beard hair, and platinum wire. The platinum wire was moderately successful in that it typically had a high melting point. However, additional research showed that air absorption weakened the filament causing it to melt at lower temperatures than expected. Edison, resolved the issue with a vacuum bulb, but ultimately deemed the design (with its low electrical resistance) too expensive. So, back to the drawing board they went; breaking up their hours upon hours of work with beer and music played (by Edison) on the lab’s pipe organ.

Some would say that the “ah-ha” moment came to Thomas Edison one night when he was “absent mindedly” rolling a piece of lampblack (or black carbon) between his fingers. But such a depiction ignores all the previous experiments, his scientific knowledge, and the fact he had used lampblack in his telephone transmitter. Such a premise also discounts the additional changes that would be made before the bulb was commercially viable. Either way, at some point late on the evening of October 21st, or sometime in the wee early morning hours of October 22nd, 1879, Thomas Edison, age 32, tested what we now consider the first successful (commercially viable) electric light bulb. The carbonized cotton could burn for up to 14½ hours. Later, Edison would switch to bamboo fiber, which lasted for 1,200 hours.

During his lifetime, Thomas Edison would be granted over 1,083 patents for things like the phonograph, the carbon transmitter, the motion picture camera, and the commercial electric light bulb. He was married with children, had influential friends in high (and low) places, and successfully ran an industry that provided for his family and the families of others. Then, at an age that was considered significantly old at the time, he lost “everything. At around 5:20 PM on December 9, 1914 an explosion ripped through the lab, destroying ten buildings, thousands of prototypes, and years of research. By the time the fire was contained, a little after midnight on December 10th, the damage was estimated at over $2 million dollars and affected over half of the plant’s property. The loss was even bigger when people realized that the insurance wouldn’t even cover a half of the damage.

While those around him were devastated, the 67-year old was in awe of the fire produced by all the different chemicals, fibers, fabrics, and elements in the labs. He was also energized about the possibility of starting over the very next day! His resilient attitude was contagious and, thanks in part to a loan from his friend Henry Ford, the plant was back in operation within three weeks. By the end of the following year, the plant had almost $10 million dollars in revenue.
